Though this institution started its journey as Medical College & Hospital in the year 2010, but it has a long rich history with a vision to serve the socio-economically poor people of that area for about 100 years as Sagore Dutt Charitable Hospital and Dispensary by a philanthropic organization. It is named after Sri Sagore Dutta, who was a Jute Merchant by Profession, though he was mainly famous for his philanthropic activity. Jute Mercantile was his family business established by his father, which he developed to such an extent that it became a famous and trusted company to British Empire. He established many schools as well as this hospital. Sagore Dutta’s original residence was in Hooghly. But he shifted to Kolkata (Sagore Dutta Lane, off Central Avenue opposite Medical College, Kolkata) to look after his business. He often had to travel from Kolkata to Hooghly. It was a long journey at that time by horse-driven cart. So he established a Bagan Bari with a huge orchard in this area on the bank of river Ganges to take a halt on his long journey (at that time the Ganges was flowing near the Barrackpore Trunk road). Once while he was staying at the Bagan Bari with his family, his wife suffered from Cholera and she could not be saved. Later there was an accident on his way, he fell from the cart and was injured. He took shelter at his Bagan Bari at Kamarhati and his condition deteriorated. In his death bed he decided to establish a School and a hospital in the land of Bagan Bari and made a will accordingly. He could not survive that injury as he was diabetic. However, his able descendants soon established a hospital named Sagore Dutt Charitable Hospital and dispensary along with the Sagore Dutta School in this land at Kamarhati. At present Kamarhati (Bengali: কামারহাটী) is a city and a municipality under Belghoria Police Station of Barrackpore subdivision in North 24 Parganas District in West Bengal. It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority and its pincode is Kolkata- 700058.
In 1937, Dr. Anderson, the then Medical Secretary of British Empire, visited the Sagore Dutt Charitable Hospital and Dispensary and recognized its immense service to the mankind[4]. As per Sagore Dutta Hospital Act, 1958 Sagore Dutt Hospital at Kamarhatty in the district of 24-Parganas, together with the Charitable Dispensary attached thereto, was taken over by the State Government with a view to the promotion of public health and later it was upgraded as a State General Hospital.
Considering the acute shortage of doctors in the state, Government of West Bengal decided to start a new medical college with a capacity of 100 MBBS student, in a strategic location of Kamarhati, which is the gateway of North Kolkata. In 2010, the Government of West Bengal issued a memo in which a sanction was accorded to set up a medical college, with an intake of 100 MBBS students, in the campus of the Sagore Dutta State General Hospital.[6]
